The Quizzical Pictures 2016 Internship Programme kicks off

The Quizzical Pictures internship programme has just accepted their 2016 intake of six interns. The internship programme is designed to fulfil the company’s mission of developing new talent in the film and television production industry.

The ten month programme offers work experience, workshops and guidance for young people who want to enter the film industry and who have a tertiary qualification in any field. “It is not every day where young people are given the opportunity to share and express their ideas and talents, this is a great opportunity most young people would dream of”, says Buhle Mofulatsi, one of the six 2016 interns at Quizzical Pictures.

Quizzical Pictures has had an internship programme for many years. However, in 2013, Quizzical Pictures started working with the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), an agency established by the Department of Arts and Culture to ensure the equitable growth of the South African film and video industry, with an objective to increase the number of people trained in the industry. “The whole experience was eye opening and I accumulated top industry standard skills that no one can ever take away from me, meaning that I can work at any production company or project and deliver good work”, says Mandla Mbatha, one of the 2013 interns who is now working for Out of Africa Entertainment as an In House Production accountant.

With a mission of merging experience and skills with the energy and perspectives of new creative voices, Quizzical Pictures encourages the interns to work on actual productions rather than merely job shadow or observe. “This internship programme gave me the opportunity to work in quality projects that are big on television, as a result it has boosted my confidence in my work”, says Alutha Mlisana, one of the 2014 interns, currently working as an editor on the third season of the e.tv drama series, Umlilo.  “It is an great feeling to get to see your work on television, my experience at Quizzical Pictures as an intern was tremendous”, says Quizzical Pictures’ previous intern, Banele Mtebele. Like Alutha, Banele Mtebele is also one of the previous years’ interns who are still with Quizzical Pictures, now working as an editor and script translator for the SAFTA winning best TV soap Rhythm City.

Quizzical Pictures is a black owned production company. It produces some of South Africa’s most interesting work including Umlilo, Rhythm City, Ya’Lla, Doubt as well as feature films such as iNumber Number, Nothing for Mahala, and Inside Story.  “98% of our interns are successfully working in the industry” says Managing Director Harriet Gavshon. “It’s something we are very proud of.”

Internships for 2017 will be announced on our facebook page
